St. Mary’s Seminary in The Baltimore Sun, 11 July 1868

St. Mary’s College

St. Mary’s College, buried in the woods of Patapsco Valley State Park in Ellicott City, is completely abandoned. Originally built in 1868 to train young men in seminary, it was left empty in 1972. The buildings decayed, for the most part, although some parts remain intact. A mysterious part of the building caught fire in 1997, but it’s still standing today and definitely worth exploring. To get there, you’ll have to park near the intersection of Ilchester Road and River Road, and then walk back to the railroad bridge; you’ll find hidden steps in the brush on the south side of the railroad bridge, and then you’ll have to find a second flight of stairs in the woods to find it. Alternatively, you can hike the Buzzard’s Rock Trail off Hilltop Road, which takes you to an overlook where you can see the ruins.

Bonus: A Piece of History Near the Expressway

Just adjacent to I-695 in the small community of Arbutus, the Arbutus Oak grows tall – and it’s been there for more than 300 years. The old oak marks the spot where General Lafayette and his troops passed by in 1781 to battle the British at Elkton. The tree is located at Exit 11A (the ramp to I-95 North), which coincidentally was re-routed to preserve the tree in place after construction crews discovered a large number of Native American artifacts around it in the 1950s.
