Wild Adventure - Explore Daniels Ghost Town
If you’re moving to Ellicott City, you already know that we have more than our fair share of great restaurants, shopping experiences and other attractions – but we’re also close to several off-the-beaten-path adventures, including Daniels.

Wild Adventure: Explore Daniels Ghost Town

Once a small, industrial town, Daniels – formerly called Elysville – was filled to the brim with industry. Back in 1810, the town was founded by Thomas Ely and his family; the Elys set up a textile mill and soon, a bustling village built around it. There were stores, churches, a school and even a railroad station.
The mill didn’t last, though. It closed in the 1960s, and though almost 90 families lived in the town, they packed up and left – and then, in 1972, tropical storm Agnes flooded what was left of the town. Agnes destroyed many of the buildings, and the few people who remained left for better opportunities.
Cars still sit where the storm left them, and there are remnants of the old buildings still standing. You can still see what’s left of the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church and its graveyard, the Pentecostal Holiness Church, and the old bridge and dam that once served the town.

How to Get to Daniels

Take Daniels Road in Ellicott City to Alberton Road in Windsor Mill. You’ll be able to see the southern part of the town after you park and follow the foot path.
You can also park at Daniels Dam on Daniels Road, where you’ll see what’s left of the bridge. Across the river you’ll see the church – and you can get there by swimming across or by carefully walking over the train bridge. If neither of those options is appealing, don’t worry – you can take the longer route by using the foot path.
The hike isn’t easy – it’s long and a little arduous – but it’s worth it.
