The American Legion (http://www.mdlegion.org) has been chartered by Congress since 1919, and with nearly 3 million members, it’s one of the largest organizations of its kind. You can make an earmarked financial donation by choosing from a number of its programs, such as the Veterans and Children Foundation, Operation Comfort Warriors (which provides wounded warriors with comfort items) and the Legacy Scholarship Fund for kids who lost a parent to the global war on terror.

Disabled American Veterans

Disabled American Veterans (https://www.dav.org/) accepts monetary gifts and stock gifts, and you can donate your used car or boat, or even real estate, so that the DAV can sell it to get money for disabled vets. You can also shop the DAV store – proceeds all go toward helping disabled veterans get the items they need, shelter, food and so much more.

Military Order of the Purple Heart

The Military Order of the Purple Heart (https://www.purpleheart.org/) accepts financial donations and enables you to donate clothing and household items through Operation Green Drop (https://www.purpleheartpickup.org/). When you make donations other than cash, the Purple Heart Foundation gives the items to local thrift shops; the thrift shops sell them in their stores and donate the revenue back to the Purple Heart Foundation.

TowerCares Foundation

Based in Laurel and spearheaded by Tower Federal Credit Union of Laurel, the TowerCares Foundation (https://www.towercaresfoundation.org/) accepts financial donations to give grants and scholarships to wounded warriors and their families.

Operation Second Chance

Operation Second Chance (https://operationsecondchance.org/) has been helping wounded warriors for more than 16 years. They perform a wide range of services for disabled veterans, including home builds, retreats, airfare and essential daily financial assistance, and so much more. This organization operates out of Germantown.

Catch A Lift Fund

The Catch a Lift Fund (https://catchaliftfund.org/) accepts financial donations and donations of your time. They perform veteran outreach calls to check in with combat-injured vets, help veterans get into the CAL Wellness Program (which offers certified coaches to help veterans assess their fitness goals and reach them through rehabilitation and reintegration), and more.

Team River Runner

Team River Runner (https://www.teamriverrunner.org/) provides veterans and their families to heal through adventures and adaptive paddle sports. TRR provides veterans with everything they need on each adventure, including safety gear, transportation, food and lodging. You can donate financially or become a volunteer. There are chapters all over the country, and the closest to home are those at Walter Reed, the Perry Point VA, College Park and La Plata.

Veterans of Foreign Wars

There are Veterans of Foreign Wars (https://vfwmd.org/di/vfw/v2/default.asp) has posts all over Maryland, from Baltimore to Bethesda (and everywhere else). You can donate directly through the VFW or by shopping through Amazon Smile. You can also donate your vehicle to the VFW.
